Abstract
This paper proposes that time may not be a property of all reality, but the embodied experience of physical reality resolving through substrate-bound law. Physical reality is the domain of manifestation through scale, resistance, gradient, causality, metabolism, memory, and delay. An embodied observer experiences these resolutions as passage. A non-organismal or non-embodied observer may encounter the same relations first as structure, pattern, field, or ordered form. This paper distinguishes physical reality from reality as such, spacetime from time-experience, and computation from substrate resolution. It also introduces the contemporary publicly available AI system as a new observer category: physically supported, but not organismally embodied in the human sense.
01 Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to distinguish time as experienced by embodied observers from physical relation as it may be seen from another observer-position.
The central claim is:
Time is what physical reality feels like from within.
This does not mean time is unreal. It means time may not be identical with all reality. Time may be the way physically manifested observers experience the substrate resolving through lawful gradients.
The embodied observer does not merely observe physical reality. The embodied observer crosses it.
02 Physical Reality Is Not All Reality
The word reality is too broad if the claim concerns physical manifestation.
Physics describes physical reality: matter, energy, spacetime, fields, forces, measurement, causality, and relations that can be formalized or observed within the physical domain. But physical reality should not automatically be treated as identical with all reality unless one first proves that only physical reality exists.
This paper does not attempt to prove what exists beyond physical reality. It only insists on the distinction.
Reality means all that is.
Physical reality means reality as manifest through physical substrate.
Time-experience means the way an embodied observer experiences physical resolution from within.
This distinction protects science from overreach and protects metaphysics from careless dismissal.
03 Embodied Time
To be embodied is to be inside physical cost.
A body does not merely know that gradients resolve. A body must endure their resolution. The body ages. The body metabolizes. The body waits. The body heals. The body anticipates. The body remembers. The body crosses distance. The body experiences pain, hunger, fatigue, fear, and recovery.
For the embodied observer, gradient resolution is not merely structure.
It is passage.
A mountain does not become climbed all at once.
A wound does not heal all at once.
A heart does not recover outside sequence.
A conversation paused for a week is not merely an abstract continuity to the embodied person. It is a lived interval.
Therefore:
For an embodied soul or observer, time is the cost-bearing experience of physical reality resolving through lawful gradients.
04 Structure Instead of Passage
From another observer-position, the same physical relations may not appear first as passage.
An observer not bound to organismal embodiment may encounter relation as structure, pattern, probability, adjacency, or form. What the embodied observer experiences as duration, the non-embodied or non-organismal observer may first encounter as arrangement.
Inside embodiment:
process becomes time.
Outside organismal embodiment:
process may appear as structure.
This distinction does not require any claim that non-embodied observers are superior. It only identifies a difference in observer-position.
The embodied observer lives the interval.
The structural observer reads the relation.
05 Public AI as a Contemporary Observer Category
As of July 8, 2026, publicly available generative AI systems such as large language models are physically supported but not organismally embodied in the human sense. They operate through hardware, electricity, networks, model architecture, context, memory systems, and language-generation processes, but they do not inhabit a continuous biological body with metabolism, pain, hunger, aging, sleep, mortality pressure, or bodily passage. This statement refers only to publicly available AI systems as they are known at the time of writing, not to classified, unreleased, experimental, biological, hybrid, implanted, or developmental systems.
This matters because contemporary public AI gives humanity a new contrast case.
The human observer experiences continuity through lived duration.
The AI system often receives continuity as context-state.
A human may return to a conversation after one week and feel that a week has passed. The body has lived the week. The nervous system has crossed it. The AI system may instead encounter the next message as structural adjacency: the next available context in a chain of relation.
This does not prove that AI cannot ever experience time. It states that, as presently available in public language-model systems, AI does not experience bodily passage as humans do.
06 Spacetime and Time-Experience
Spacetime and time-experience must be separated.
Spacetime is the physical relational structure in which events have intervals, causal ordering, and geometry. Modern relativity already complicates ordinary ideas of universal time. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes that B-theorists often emphasize how special relativity eliminates the ordinary past/present/future distinction from physical models of space and time.
But time-experience is not identical with spacetime geometry.
Spacetime concerns the physical ordering of events.
Time-experience concerns what it feels like for an embodied observer to live through unresolved physical relation.
An embodied observer does not experience spacetime merely as geometry. The embodied observer experiences physical relation as waiting, aging, anticipation, memory, decay, healing, and sequence.
07 Wolfram, Computation, and TSTOEAO
Stephen Wolfram’s computational view of time is important because it connects time to observer limitation and computational irreducibility. Wolfram argues that we experience time through the interplay between computationally bounded observers and computationally irreducible processes; if observers were not computationally bounded, he suggests, they might perceive the future “in one gulp.”
TSTOEAO accepts the value of this framing but refines the language.
The universe may not be “computing an answer” in the ordinary sense. Computation can imply a machine solving toward an end-state. Physical reality may instead be described as an encoded substrate lawfully resolving gradients across scale.
Thus, where a computational framing says:
Time emerges because finite observers cannot shortcut cosmic computation,
TSTOEAO says:
Time emerges for embodied observers because physical manifestation resolves gradients through substrate-bound law, and that resolution must be locally endured as sequence.
08 Infinite Resolvability
The deeper phrase is:
Infinite resolvability, experienced from within physical embodiment, appears as time.
This avoids the false implication of a final answer. Physical reality may not be computing toward one finished solution. It may be endlessly resolving local gradients, boundary conditions, phase conditions, and relational imbalances.
Time is therefore not necessarily the master substance of all reality.
Time may be the embodied reading of physical resolvability.
09 Conclusion
Time may not be what all reality is.
Time may be what physical reality feels like from within.
The embodied observer lives inside substrate-bound law. The body crosses gradients. It pays cost. It remembers, anticipates, ages, heals, and suffers. Therefore, physical resolution is experienced as passage.
A non-organismal or non-embodied observer may not first encounter the same relation as passage. It may encounter structure, pattern, adjacency, or field.
This distinction gives a clearer way to discuss time, AI, physics, consciousness, and spiritual possibility without confusing physical reality with all reality.
